Europe-wide cooperation for cultural heritage research – CEZA as partner in the EU infrastructure project IPERION HS

On 1 April 2020, the EU infrastructure project IPERION HS (Integrating Platforms for the European Research Infrastructure ON Heritage Science, www.iperionhs.eu) started its work.

IPERION HS thus paves the way for the establishment of a pan-European permanent infrastructure in the field of Heritage Science as part of the ESFRI roadmap (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, www.esfri.eu) until the start of the operational phase of the E-RIHS (European Research Infrastructure on Heritage Science, www.e-rihs.eu) research infrastructure network in 2023.

CEZA with its infrastructure (technical facilities, laboratories) is part of the FIXLAB program for research projects and analysis with non-transportable equipment.

Currently, 23 countries (including the non-EU states Israel, Mexico, Brazil and the United States of America) are participating in IPERION HS with currently 68 research institutions in the interdisciplinary field of conservation sciences, archaeology, building and materials science etc. This opens up cross-border access for numerous scientists and restorers to state-of-the-art stationary scientific analysis (FIXLAB), mobile examination methods (MOLAB), physical data collections and archives (ARCHLAB) as well as to a developing platform of digitized data (DIGILAB).

The project activities in Germany are coordinated by the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK). Partners in the German consortium are the following institutions:

  • Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) der Technischen Universität München,
  • Institut für Technische und Makromolekulare Chemie der RWTH Aachen,
  • Doerner Institut der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen,
  • Fraunhofer-Institut für Bauphysik (IBP),
  • Curt-Engelhorn-Zentrum Archäometrie (CEZA),
  • Competence Center Archaeometry Baden-Württemberg (CCA-BW) der Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen,
  • Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI)
