About us
About CEZA
CEZA is a scientific research institute, a specialized laboratory for analyses in the heritage sciences, a service provider in the field of archaeometry and a provider of scientific analyses.
Our research
We are your competent partner for scientific investigations of heritage assets and a cooperation partner in many research projects.
Management
The management of CEZA gGmbH currently consists of four members: Two Managing Directors, one General Director and an Authorized Representative.
Team
The CEZA team currently comprises around 30 employees. In addition to the colleagues from the scientific areas, CEZA also has a professional administration and back office.
Annual reports
If you would like to find out more about our work, our projects and our priorities in compact summaries, simply click through our annual reports.
Certificates
With ISO 9001:2015, CEZA has established a quality management system that helps to continuously improve internal processes.
Services
Material analyses
Material analysis is used to characterize the chemical composition and structure of metals, glass, rocks, ores, slags and ceramics. It can be used not only in archaeometry, but also in other areas such as industry, forensics and other fields.
Isotope analyses
The determination of isotope compositions, in particular the combination of different isotope systems, has a wide range of applications in the fields of archaeology, geosciences and biosciences. At the CEZA, they are mainly used for archaeometallurgical, geological and bioarchaeological questions.
Technological investigations
The aim of technological investigations in archaeometry is primarily the characterization of materials and objects on a macroscopic and microscopic level. However, such investigations are also used in other areas.
Authenticity tests
We carry out authenticity tests on various metals and their alloys.
Dating
Direct age determination of objects is a cornerstone of archaeological research.
Determination of biogenic/renewable carbon
Methods used in archaeometry can be used to investigate so-called bio-based materials.
Bioarchaeology
Human and animal remains are the sources of bioarchaeological research at CEZA.
Scientific support
The basic prerequisites for the generation of meaningful analysis data are the use of adequate methods and the selection of suitable sample material.

Sponsors and partners
Our sponsors and partners are a decisive factor in our successful work. Many projects would not be possible without this long-term support and cooperation.
Co-operations
Our cooperation with large and respected institutions enables us to offer a broad portfolio and long-term planning security.
Projects
The expertise of our employees, the large portfolio and a modern and well-positioned infrastructure are our strengths, which make the large number of major projects possible in the first place.
Publications
Numerous nationally and internationally effective publications in which our colleagues are involved attest to the expertise of our scientists.

Methods
Our portfolio of methods is extensive and is unrivaled internationally. At our institute you will find more or less the complete range of scientific research methods.
Materials
There is almost no material that we cannot examine or analyze. The selection ranges from bioapatite, wood, plastic or metals to skin or teeth.
Infrastructure
The extensive range of methods also requires a comprehensive infrastructure. At CEZA, you receive precise analyses thanks to state-of-the-art technology and highly trained scientists.
Research focus
Our research focuses range from archaeometallurgy, chronology structure and climate research, the dating of archaeological finds to human morphology, health, nutrition and mobility.
