About CEZACEZA is a scientific research institute, a specialized laboratory for analyses in the heritage sciences, a service provider in the field of archaeometry and a provider of scientific analyses.

Our researchWe are your competent partner for scientific investigations of heritage assets and a cooperation partner in many research projects.

ManagementThe management of CEZA gGmbH currently consists of three members: A scientific director, a scientific board member and a commercial director.

TeamThe CEZA team currently comprises around 30 employees. In addition to the colleagues from the scientific areas, CEZA also has a professional administration and back office.

Services
Material analysesMaterial analysis is used to characterize the chemical composition and structure of metals, glass, rocks, ores, slags and ceramics. It can be used not only in archaeometry, but also in other areas such as industry, forensics and other fields.

Isotope analysesThe determination of isotope compositions, in particular the combination of different isotope systems, has a wide range of applications in the fields of archaeology, geosciences and biosciences. At the CEZA, they are mainly used for archaeometallurgical, geological and bioarchaeological questions.

Technological investigationsThe aim of technological investigations in archaeometry is primarily the characterization of materials and objects on a macroscopic and microscopic level. However, such investigations are also used in other areas.

Authenticity testsWe carry out authenticity tests on various metals and their alloys.

DatingDirect age determination of objects is a cornerstone of archaeological research.

Determination of biogenic/renewable carbonMethods used in archaeometry can be used to investigate so-called bio-based materials.

BioarchaeologyHuman and animal remains are the sources of bioarchaeological research at CEZA.

Scientific supportThe basic prerequisites for the generation of meaningful analysis data are the use of adequate methods and the selection of suitable sample material.

MethodsOur portfolio of methods is extensive and is unrivaled internationally. At our institute you will find more or less the complete range of scientific research methods.

MaterialsThere is almost no material that we cannot examine or analyze. The selection ranges from bioapatite, wood, plastic or metals to skin or teeth.

InfrastructureThe extensive range of methods also requires a comprehensive infrastructure. At CEZA, you receive precise analyses thanks to state-of-the-art technology and highly trained scientists.

Research focusOur research focuses range from archaeometallurgy, chronology structure and climate research, the dating of archaeological finds to human morphology, health, nutrition and mobility.
