Wood
Description
Wood is one of the oldest used plants, is one of the most important renewable raw materials and also a regenerative energy source. Its use in constructions (e.g. pile dwellings and huts), means of transport (e.g. carts and wooden boats) and objects (e.g. charcoal, weapons and shields) as well as its importance in forestry anchors wood as an important part of human civilization in our cultural history.
Sample properties
Samples can be delivered wet, dry and charred. Please consider the following points during transport: dry wood can usually be left without further treatment, wet wood should be kept moist and charcoal should be fixed as break-proof as possible to avoid further fragmentation.
Sample size dendrochronology
This method uses documented reference series, so-called chronologies, as comparative values. Therefore, more than 50 annual rings should be available in order to achieve a meaningful result.
Sample size 14C analysis
The condition of the sample is to be neglected here; the minimum quantity should be 20 mg. If less is available, please contact your CEZA contact person.
Sample size strontium isotopic analysis
Strontium requires detailed contextual information to guarantee a meaningful assessment. Therefore, please consult your CEZA contact person for details on sample quantity and quality.
