Homer&#8217;s characterisation of &#8220;gold-rich Mycenae&#8221; (\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c7\u03c1\u03c5\u03c3\u03bf\u03c2 \u039c\u03c5\u03ba\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7; Iliad 11, 46) also bears witness to this. In this project, an innovative method for sampling and analysing Mycenaean gold developed at ETH Zurich and CEZA will be developed: With the portable laser ablation system, samples can be taken on site in museums and brought to the laboratories in Mannheim for further analysis using mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (pLA-ICP-MS). This eliminates the need to transport the objects to be examined to a laboratory, which is often not possible for various reasons. The sampled site is not visible to the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other mobile methods, such as X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), work completely non-destructively, but are much less sensitive and only detect the surface of the objects down to a depth of a few \u00b5m. Since soil storage usually leads to a depletion of the near-surface material in copper and silver, such analyses are not representative for the entire object. Therefore, they are usually not sufficient to answer questions regarding the origin and authenticity of objects.
